Technology Development

Scientist and engineers at the NOC are continuously working on the development of new and innovative technologies to aid in the advancement of scientific research undertaken in the most extreme environmental conditions. With a wealth of experience and over 20 years of technology development history, the NOC is leading the way in the advancement of marine technologies.

A great amount of care and time is spent creating designs, prototyping, developing and testing these new technologies to ensure they will be durable enough to endure oceanic conditions such as crushing pressure conditions and strong currents. As a leading centre for oceanographic research, our new technologies are enabling us to travel past the boundaries of conventional measurement techniques in order to explore the remotest regions on our planet.

Technology developed at the NOC ranges from chips the size of a fingernail that are able to measure chemical parameters in the ocean, to large deep ocean platforms able to carry a multitude of instruments and sensors, making measurements from the deep ocean over periods of up to 10 years. We also work on the creation of smart technologies and software for autonomous and robotic vehicles, enabling them to be able to determine their own path based on the measurements they record.
