Autonomous underwater platform systems have the unique potential to realize wide-area, high-accuracy, and long-term observation through collaboration of multiple autonomous agents such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and seafloor stations. We have developed a series of autonomous underwater platforms for detailed seafloor observation.
The AUV Tri-TON 2 can perform detailed survey of the seafloor based on mutual acoustic positioning with a seafloor station. The autonomous docking scheme for the AUV based on fusion of acoustic and visual sensing will be explained. The AUV also forms a testbed for collaborative navigation of multiple AUVs, where results of successful multi AUV sea trials will be presented.
HATTORI is our latest AUV, which is a low-cost, low-drag AUV capable of tracking rugged terrains at high speed. We have performed field expedition at coral reefs in Okinawa in collaboration with Dr. Blair Thornton and his team under the support of the Daiwa-Anglo-Japanese Foundation.
Toshihiro Maki received the Ph.D. degree in engineering from the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 2008. He is currently an associate professor in Center for Integrated Underwater Observation Technology, Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo. His main research topic is underwater robotics, especially intelligent behaviors of AUVs, long-term deployment of autonomous systems.
Takumi Matsuda received the Ph.D. degree in environmental science from The University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 2015. He is currently a Project Researcher with the Center for Integrated Underwater Observation Technology, Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo. His research interests include multiple autonomous underwater vehicle navigation, cooperation of autonomous marine platforms, and probabilistic robotics.
The Innovation Centre can be reached via the workshops/stores corridor on the ground floor, and a sign to the Hub is about 100 m down that corridor on the right. Go up the stairs and through the door and turn right. Note that the access door to the Innovation Centre Hub is security-locked, but we will ensure it is monitored so attendees can be let in promptly.
We only have seating capacity of about 30 in the Innovation Centre Hub, so be aware that if we exceed this it will be standing room only. There will be opportunities for informal discussions over doughnuts in the Innovation Centre Hub before and after the talks.
