I help deliver NERC’s strategic mission of working in partnership with business, government, scientists and civil society by providing high-level, proactive National Oceanography Centre (NOC) National Capability executive support to:
- The International & Strategic Partnerships Office (ISPO) of the National Oceanography Centre.
- The UK Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Office (UK IOC)
- The government’s Marine Science Co-ordination Committee (MSCC) and associated working groups supporting the UK Marine Science Strategy.
I am the focal point for communications with MSCC-affiliated working groups including the Underwater Sound Forum, Marine Environmental Data Information Network (MEDIN – ‘big data’ is one of the Government’s ‘Eight Great Technologies’), International Working Group, Communications Working Group and the Research Vessel Working Group.
These groups fit with NERC’s goal of ‘fostering UK and international partnerships’, also with NOC’s four strategic aims, and supports the work of Government marine-active departments including DEFRA, DECC, MoD, DBIS, FCO, DFID and devolved administrations.
I act as the interface between the wider international marine science community and designated MSCC and UK IOC working groups. This includes acting as the first point of contact for UK IOC enquiries and the back-up recipient of UK tsunami national contact communications. I assist with the brokering of strategic partnerships with others.
I help develop the capability of the wider UK marine science community through interactions with government departments, non-government organisations (NGOs), MSCC working groups and sub groups. The ability to network and forge and maintain effective links with UK and international scientists, experts in their field, managers and directors on a regular basis is an important aspect of my job. I also help to manage key external relationships with colleagues within ISPO, and to manage and co-ordinate large international conferences, national meetings and stakeholder events.
A specialism of this post is the ability to independently write, proof and produce specialist publications, both paper and online, in support of ISPO, UK IOC, MSCC, their associated working groups, and, if required, in support of the National Oceanography Centre through the use of publishing and print expertise. For example the electronic publication of Research Vessel fleet information and the publication of an Underwater Sound Progress Report II.
I also work closely with the Head of UK IOC and ISPO to manage budgets, create and manage on their behalf efficient office systems, advise on procurement, and to troubleshoot on their behalf when necessary.
